Lesson 6 – Let’s Begin 1: Learning the Letter Cc and Numbers 1 to 5

In the previous lessons of Let’s Begin 1, students were introduced to the vowels Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, and Uu. Now, in Lesson 6, they begin exploring consonants—starting with the letter Cc—alongside counting from 1 to 5.

This lesson combines vocabulary building, pronunciation practice, number recognition, and handwriting—all through playful, child-friendly content. By linking words like cat, car, and candy with a simple counting dialogue, young learners develop language skills naturally and joyfully.

What Is the Letter Cc and How Is It Pronounced?

The letter Cc is the third letter of the English alphabet and one of the most common consonants. In early learner materials like Let’s Begin 1, it is typically introduced with its “hard” sound /k/, as heard in words like cat, car, and candy.

While advanced learners will later discover that C can also make a /s/ sound (as in cent), beginners focus on the /k/ sound to avoid confusion. This simplification helps children build confidence and pronunciation accuracy from the start.

Pronunciation Tips for the Letter Cc

In this lesson, the letter C is pronounced as /k/. To produce this sound:

  • Raise the back of your tongue to touch the soft palate.
  • Release a short, quick burst of air—no voice, just a clear /k/ sound.
  • Practice with simple syllables: ca – co – cu.

Pairing this sound with visual aids (like pictures of a cat or car) helps children connect sound, meaning, and spelling effortlessly.

How to Write the Letter Cc

Capital C: Start at the top line of three-line paper and draw a smooth curve downward and to the right, stopping at the bottom line—like a backward “C” without a full circle.

Lowercase c: Begin on the middle line and draw a smaller curve that opens to the right, staying between the middle and bottom lines.

Encourage children to practice writing each form at least one full line in their three-line notebooks to build consistent, neat handwriting.
